Electron diffraction is the most recent addition to the crystallographic toolkit and allows researchers to determine crystal structures directly from nanocrystals of sizes around 10-1000 nm.
The ELDICO ED-1 – is designed by crystallographers for crystallographers with many different applications.
What’s new ?
With X-Ray diffraction
We need to grow a single crystal “big” enough : 10 to 100 µm. It is a long and random process.
Sometimes, no single crystal can be obtained, or not of the target crystal form. (even by Holodiag !)
With Electron diffraction
We need “small” single crystals, from 10 to 1000 nm. Particle coming from a crystalline powder.
Holodiag expertise allow to access any crystalline powder sample with fast and easy process.
Applications
-
- Crystal structure resolution: Electron diffraction is a simple measurement to determine crystal structure. Typical issue is to never get a single crystal corresponding to the target crystal structure. With electron diffraction this can be achieved from powder sample, which is much easier to control.
- Molecular structure elucidation: Dedicated to the confirmation of molecular structure for medchem or, impurity molecular structure resolution. Absolute configuration (or chirality) determination (much more efficient than with X-ray). Here we need crystalline powder, it can be worked out directly on the small fraction sample from prep-LC.
- Salt or co-crystal nature determination: When investigating salts / co-crystals formation and crystallization, it is necessary to ensure their nature. Standard investigations can be long, multiple (LC, NMR, ICP-MS, fluorescence) and might never give a definitive answer. Electron diffraction allows to ensure the nature and stoichiometry of the new solid form directly from the native sample.
- Reference samples qualification and manufacturing for analytical methods validation: Health authorities are currently increasing their requirements on crystal forms and XRPD analyses. The need for reference samples of the undesired crystal forms (“impurities” for XRPD) is increasing, especially for LOD and quantification.
- Development and validation of powder XRPD methods: For a few years now, requests from customers for a full analytical method service are rising, motivated by health authorities.
ED-1 is a game changer for organic materials. There is no need for large single crystals : powder sample straight “from the flask”.
